Rental Scam Alert!

gw_offcampushousing_030309-014Hey students! Many of you are combing the city looking for great rental deals ahead of the Summer and Fall semesters, and with bargain-hunting comes the possibility of falling victim to a scam. WJLA-TV is alerting District residents about a new scam that is really dirty and tawdry. It goes like this (via email):

Scammer: “Hey. I got a great apartment, but I won’t be here for a few months, so I want to rent it out for next to nothing. Want it?”

You: “Heck yeah I want it! What do I need to do?”

Scammer: “Just wire me some cash and I’ll have my friend hook you up with the keys when you’re ready to move in.”

You: (thinking) “Hmmmm…..I…guess that’s okay. Where do I send the money?”

The result? SCAMMED!

Be alert and never wire money to anyone on the promise of a rental unit and always do your homework before signing a lease. Right here at we have a host of tools that allow you to do throrough research on a rental property or prospective landlord. Check out the WJLA report here.
